Ever wonder about: The playbook, the classes, the practices, the fame, the popularity etc. Well its not all guts and glory. There is a lot of blood sweat and tears. Can you imagine waking up at 5:30am for a morning work out, during your off season? Or could you imagine waking up around 6:00am to make it to the locker room by 7:20 am for check-in for morning practice before class? Or meeting a couple times a day to discuss football plays and watch game film on your opponents? As a full scholarship player of a Division 1aa school, I will tell you that those are some of the things we go thru. And that is just on the field.
Imagine going to class all day then practice right after on days when you have a P.M practice, then after that practice going to an over crowded dining hall for approx. 30 minutes before you have to go to a mandatory study hall depending on your GPA or if your just a freshman.
What about football camp? 2 weeks before anyone else reports to campus not a girl in sight just you, your football team, coaches and athletic trainers. Practicing twice a day in 80-90 degree heat depending on where you live also known as 2 a days. With meetings about 3 times thru out the day and when your finally free after your last meeting you got about 30 minutes just to chill out before the mandatory bed check…That is what it means to play college football and that is preseason. Now during season it gets better, I’ll tell you why:
1) Your season has started> you get to hit an opponent instead of your teammates in practice
2) More freedom> less mandatory meetings, no mandatory breakfast checks or bed checks
3) Other students on campus > girls
4) Partying
5) Some traveling, flying to away games meeting people in airports asking you “do you play football” even though you and like 60 teammates have your school name and the word football stitched into a polo.
6) Signing autographs>that was big made me feel good
7) Your scholarship/housing and meal plan check comes in after season starts equals more partying
You get the freedom to see your family, * you couldn’t see them during football camp.
Gauranteed to get you a 6-pack
The most important thing I got out of playing college football is an opportunity. I got an opportunity to earn a degree, to become a stronger person, and to be able to network with others. I met great people and I learned a whole lot in and out the classroom and on and off the field. Football has made me who I am today.
