Spring Football in College
Well I remember my first College Spring football like it was yesterday. It was a big breakthrough for me. I’ll just say hearing the words “Do what ever you have to do before next season we need you on the field” were all I needed to hear. I took it and ran with it. I tried to gain as much weight as I could. That was the only summer that I didn’t stay on campus, I spent the summer working out and gaining a few pounds. I definitely came back ready to start, though I couldn’t have ever imagined I’d be taking a seniors spot.
College Spring Football Schedule
The main thing the upper classman stressed was that spring football meant a lot of work. A lot of conditioning because we didn’t need to be “fresh”. What that means is for example during the College Football season you have a game every week unless you have a buy week. So you need to have your legs under you come saturday game time. So that means practice during the week isn’t as tough as it is in the spring. What makes spring tough is the fact that it is every other day with weight lifting in between. You have more classes because you have more time to take classes, which means more work after practice.
College Spring Football Elements
What College Spring Football season consist of? Usually bad weather if your in the northeast possible snowstorm and rain. As far as on the football field you will get your share of agility drills and practices typically lasting longer than regular season by far. Actually I’ll explain how long:
One practice we went 24 periods. Wait I never explained periods= well a lot of college football programs based their practices off of periods. Periods last anywhere between 3 to 5 minutes usually 5 minutes though. With all of this advance technology many coaches have automatic timers that sound off at the end of every period. Those timers are attached to a clock usually with an air horn, the clock is visible to everyone on the field. Anyhow for instance you can 3- 5 minute periods of individual which means 15 minutes of individual fundamental drills with your position coach. I like the whole philosophy behind using periods because it keeps you as a player involved with the business aspect, so you know exactly what your getting into for that practice. The bad thing about this is some players may find out they have 24 periods that day and they will have a negative attitude and could pass it along the team.
Spring Football after Spring Break
I can truthfully say that I have never went anywhere for spring break. 99% of the reason is because spring break takes place at the end of the winter College Football Workout season. Also the fact that once you return from spring break, Spring Football begins. I never liked the idea of mixing partying with football. Obviously if you are serious about success on the field you won’t either. But to each is own, after all College is a big experience. It is always fun to watch spring football seasons unfold. This will be my 2nd year watching my college spring football season, but my 6 watching my high school. It helps me see how the team will be for the following season. And all of the players love to see me, even if they don’t really know me but just heard about me or watched my film. Speaking of, I feel honored when my old coaches show my film or watch it themselves. That is a great honor.
In closing
In closing Spring Football is a time to prove yourself on all levels. Just to mention I won an award in my College Spring Football Season 2003 “Biggest Surprise on Offense”. Well that’s what happens when you make a few NFL Prospects your BitCH!! But on a positive note I would like to encourage all of my younger readers to get out and observe some spring football practices at schools that you are looking at. And as a lot of you know if you come up my way NEW ENGLAND, let me know I will try to arrange a time to meet with you. Well until next time….
