NFL Scouting Combine
Today I watched the NFL combine. It’s always fun to watch and see how other athletes perform in relation to yourself. I’m 23 years old unfortunately I had a slight tear in my hip which enable me from evening setting foot in a region combine…And it didn’t help that my “Alma Mata” Stiffed my senior class, and didn’t give us a pro day…I won’t go into that at all.
Super Human
A 4.2 forty? Darren Mcfadden, Kalvin McRae, Chris Johnson, Deshean Jackson Just to name a few. Kalvin McRae happens to be my cousin, for those of you who don’t know he is a very powerful running back he has had great stats throughout his college career, and a good performance at the Hula Bowl this year. Wow, I just saw him go through a drill on tv. Anyhow these guys are great athletes, I remember watching the Gmac bowl 2006 and Kalvin McRae was doing some warm ups with a trainer. The drill went as follows he was in some what of a push up position but he was walking forward at a fast pace alternating left foot and right hand and vice versa. That drill looked ridiculous, and the rest of these guys at the combine do I even need to say more…
Setting Goals
I heard a player say, I waited my whole life for this. That goes back to know why you play. He set a goal and he accomplished it. I know players that feel that they accomplished their goal by getting invited to an NFL team, never mind whether they stayed on the roster or not. My whole point is basically set a goal and stick to it but don’t over look other things as far as your class work, your current team/organization. The players that over look those last two things usually end up in this position:
no degree
taking extra years to complete their degree-A.K.A 6 year plan
Or having a degree just to say they have one…not really a degree that they desired
Players that over look their team end up as follows:
Playing selfish
Constantly hurting the team
Being undisciplined
Be Humble
If you be humble it will go along way, on and off the field. For example when I graduated from College and finished my “College Football Career” (I’m not done playing) I had a lot of people that I just met really looking after me. People that were disgusted by the lack of help I received from past coaches. I had a personal trainer who loved my character. He told me he only trained athletes that were serious and he knew I was serious, the sad part is I got hurt while training…I’m recovering about 90% right now. Anyhow back to being humble and disciplined. I tilt my hat to Coach C my high school coach. He always looked out for me and still does. The first thing he taught me was to be disciplined. He made us say yes sir and no sir, now don’t get me wrong my parents did an excellent job. But Coach C showed and proved how you could get so much more respect from just being disciplined.
NFL Access One Day
To my high school audience I want to let you know it’s nothing wrong with focusing on football; Eating, Sleeping and Drinking it. But have the same mentality about your academic work. Just as you have a great respect for the game of football, have respect for people you come into everyday contact with coaches included. In my honest opinion a lot of times it is about who you know in life. So network, meet people you never know who you will meet. One day I was out promoting and I met a guy who is head of promotions for Def Jam records, and he said he is willing to help me. Any how NFL Access one day, I will see some of you on there or you just might see me.
In Closing
See I didn’t mention this in the earlier part of my blog. But being disciplined means being “coachable” Coaches/Scouts love a disciplined player. Respect is reciprocal. They don’t want a player that they feel like is going to be “cancerous to their team” they want players with good attitudes. Players that set good examples for younger players. If you have good players on your team good things will happen. I have players that call RMCFE and some of them are saying “Yes Sir” then I have other players that don’t even say hello, just say “Yea who dis” Now would you say that to the Recruiting coordinator at LSU? I hope not…In closing you never know who are talking to so keep that in mind…Keep working hard in the class room and in the gym. Until next time….
