Marketing Yourself Part 2
Now that you have your video/dvd ready to be mailed, where do you mail it to? If you have been in contact with college coaches or scouts then you already have this information. If you don’t have the information it is not a big deal, Rate My College Football Experience will provide it to you free of charge.
Selling yourself
Some key things to remember when mailing out your dvd, you are marketing yourself. You are basically a salesman you have to convince the coaches that their program needs you and they should give you a scholarship. Your part in the classroom will take care of itself. When you mail your tape in, that is the proof that you are what you say you are.
Mailing your tapes
Coaches and scouts specifically told me when I was mailing my tapes “Don’t send it if you are not going full speed.” When you think about it that should be obvious, but to me it made me hesitant. I didn’t send tapes in right away, I wanted to wait until I felt I had a great game. But what was confusing me was that my team was having a losing season. My high school coaching staff took care of the tapes. Now I’m not saying that it is a bad idea to let your coaches make your tapes. What I am saying is that you know yourself better than anybody else so you can be your own judge. Also I will say that it was bad that I did not check my tape before it was mailed. The next time I saw “the tape that got me my scholarship” was when I was a red shirt sophomore in college. My reaction was: “How did this tape earn me a scholarship.”
Contacting the school(s) that you want to go to play for
Like I mentioned earlier in a blog, questionnaires aren’t a guarantee but they can be beneficial in the marketing process. And if coaches or scouts haven’t found you it doesn’t mean that you can’t find them. Yes it takes less work if you have already been in contact with coaches or scouts. But if you haven’t, you just have to get in touch with the right people, Recruiting Coordinators. Most college football programs have a designated recruiting coordinator. The recruiting coordinator deals specifically with high school recruits.
There are certain NCAA rules listed below regarding contact between College Football Coaches and High School Football Players.
As a junior you can receive 1 call from each coach between April 15 and May 31. However this is the time of the College Spring Football Season, you are allowed to attend their spring football season. (I recommend you do this)
As a senior you are allowed to receive 1 call per week from each coach. You can receive unlimited calls per week during the contact period. *Take note of who calls you the most during the “Contact Period” because that can be a big indicator of who really wants you to play for them.
Coaches/scouts will come to your school once during the contact period. This is important when marketing yourself because if you haven’t been in contact with coaches, this would be a good time to get them to talk to you face to face at your school.
Recap
1) Create your tape/dvd.
2) Contact the school you want to play for.
3) Mail in your tapes.
4) Follow up with the schools that you have sent your tapes to.
