Inspired by a conversation

This entry is inspired by a conversation I had with a player earlier. I’ve had plenty of conversations with players that are worried about 1 of 2 things:

Their size
The size of their school

Let me ask a question to my audience:

If you played at a bigger school would you honestly play better than if you played at a smaller school?

Personally it wouldn’t effect me. I’d still be Mel Lewis, the same height and weight and have the same amount of “Want too”- a phrase made famous by Coach I…He always talked about arm action, hat flat and having some want too…

How do you do it?

That was the question asked, simply put. I let the player know my height and weight when I was his age, about 17: 6′ft 235lbs on a good day playing offensive line. We were 1-9 my senior season of high school and I still signed a full scholarship.

My Response Verbatim

Well the first thing in my honest opinion is to know why you play the game. I played because I loved the game, I never even planned on going to college, let alone going on a football scholarship. The passion that I have for the game earned the scholarship. I never practiced or played with the mindset that I am going to get a scholarship. I practiced and played with the mindset that I am going to be the best at this position. That got me far, it got me to be a four year starter in College, 2 times all conference, All New England and team captain for 2006.

Find Motivation

If you don’t have it, you don’t have it. You can’t search for motivation to play football. I spoke to a player yesterday and he said they only won 1 game last year but it ended their 5 year losing streak. The time I spoke to this player it was motivational to me to hear some of those things. And I was letting him know to see if he felt motivated. Thats why I say know why you play the game. If your playing for the wrong reasons yes playing at a small school will bother you and make you feel like you aren’t going to be scouted or recruited. Let me reiterate that I did play at a smaller high school and I was a small Offensive Lineman. RMCFE we work with players that from Championship programs that aren’t even being recruited. So don’t let the size of your school fool you.

You are who you say you are

Kind of the like the commercial “They are who we thought they were” I tell players everyday when you send in your film just make sure you are proving yourself. Basically show that coaching staff you are who you say you are. If you want to play college football set that as your goal and don’t settle for nothing less. You control your destiny…This is because you are the player that is on that tape when the coaches evaluate it. I was so nervous when I was getting recruited a coach said “If you aren’t going full speed on the tape don’t send it” Now obviously I know what full speed is but just hearing that from a college coach let me know right away “It’s a business.”
