Haven’t heard from any coaches?
If you haven’t heard from a coach, don’t think you don’t have options. There are a few things you must do and do them quickly to get you on the right track.
1) Know your options- Prep school, Walk-on tryout, Play in a lower division and transfer.
2) Get your game film together *Important that you don’t just make a highlight.
3) Get in touch with coaches. *We provide this information for free at RMCFE
Many players begin to panic if they are a senior and have not heard from any coaches or scouts. Assuming you followed the protocol as a junior of filling out questionnaires and sending them in, I can see why it might make you nervous. But don’t doubt yourself, never think you aren’t good enough.
Motivation
Kind of like that T.I song called “motivation.” If the coaches aren’t calling you let it motivate you. If you’re a senior you can get a second chance by going to a prep school. Now this isn’t a bad thing and I will tell you why. Most of my teammates that came out of prep school, were more physical. This just shows that they went to prep school for a year or a half of year and really increased their strength and physical conditioning. Best of all you still go to college and have the same eligibility that you would’ve had coming out of high school. So you still get to red-shirt if your coaches choose that as an option for you.
Focus on your goal
If you go to prep school as a result of not getting a college scholarship, stay focused. Remember the reason you are there, because you didn’t get any offers. Now you control your destiny. Scouts will come, and I can guarantee you if you are really putting everything you’ve got out there out on the field you will catch some coaches attention. Set personal goals out there, if you play Defensive End find out some college DE stats and set a goal for sacks based off of that. And the same idea for any other positions.
Marketing revisited
This weekend I spoke to a former NFL player he told me an important aspect about marketing. He told me that when you send your tape/dvd to the coaches that you must include some sort of a resume. He stressed the importance of this, he said some coaches will pull up the information to validate it. So remember when your marketing yourself, you are showing and proving to that coaching staff that their program needs you. Always be encouraged So you didn’t get a scholarship offer, or the school you wanted to go to isn’t showing interest in you. So what, don’t give up that easy. Find another school in the same conference…That means they play each other, at that point in time that game turns into a personal rivalry between the school you are playing for and the school that didn’t offer you.
The Bottom Line
The reason why RMCFE has a page dedicated to scholarships is: in the event that you don’t get a football scholarship you will already be prepared with a back up plan. If you have an alternative option for scholarship money, its no big deal if you have to walk on or if you only get a partial scholarship. Always have a plan in case things don’t go your way. It’s football, and you have to overcome adversity to be successful. RMCFE
