Gaining Weight

I can remember like yesterday and I sit here and laugh I was a measly 235lbs playing offensive line in high school. I always felt that I was one of the faster kids in my school, so Senior Year I decided to run track. I went from 235lbs to 207lbs. For those of you who follow my blog now you know why I reported to training camp at 218lbs. It was a lot easier to lose weight simply because I was always running for track. Gaining weight took some time and a lot of calories.

How I did it

The following is my own personal road to weight gain during my high school football career. I am not advising anyone to attempt this at all. I will not be held responsible. Now that thats out the way. I remember a teammate of mines when we were sophmores we were in the cafeteria and fried chicken , mashed potatoes, rice and gravy was on the menu. He said “Man you gotta eat more than that, and throw mad gravy on that shit.” So I looked at him and said well he do bench 405lbs so why not listen to him. Little did he know I loved ice cream. Everytime I was in the caf and they were serving ice cream, I was a sight to see. You could ask anybody my tray would have a mountain of ice cream, hot fudge, nuts and cookies or brownies. Then I’d go right back up for another. I would say for about that first year nothing really happened.

I moved off campus and started cooking my own food and buying my own half gallons of ice cream. Thats when it hit me. I remember when I was in high school and had my wisdom teeth out and they made me eat ice cream for a week everyday I was literally eating a half gallon/day. I gained 10lbs in one week hahahaha. So I took that approach I was making my own fried chicken and barbeque ribs and eating my half gallon everyday. I will admit I had a fast metabolism. My roommates would be like “yo how you eat ice cream everyday and don’t gain weight.” So I upped my calories even more eating out a lot more and when I ate out in restaurants of course I had to have ice cream. Let say Cold Stone creamery became my best friend and it was right next to the chineese buffet Whooo!!!

In that one year I went from 230lbs to 245lbs I played @ 245lb the following season
In the next year I went from 245lbs to 255lbs I played @ 255lb the following season
Next year I went from 255lbs to 285lbs.ooops NCAA decided to test me now* Future blog

Enough about me

When gaining or losing weight it is all about calories. To gain weight you have to know your maintenance amount of calories and increase that number by atleast 250-300 calories. Maintenance calories are the amount of calories that you need to maintain your current weight. So for example take someone weight 285lbs maintenance is about 3200 calories a day. So to gain weight you would just need to add some extra calories everyday, give or take the calories you burn off in practice or training. Sounds simple? It really is, people just don’t know this. Now if you want to gain weight but not as much body fat, this is where things get expensive. Still increase calories but do it with healthy choices: Oatmeal, Brown rice, chicken breast, tuna, salmon, tilapia, cod, egg whites, real lean beef and a low carb high protein shake. Look at all those things I just listed I eat all of those in a day since I learned everything I now know about proper nutrition. But it’s expensive, ice cream isn’t.

Other important things

Don’t get all wrapped up in the creatine debate. I never took it during my high school or college football career. And I had a lot of success on the field. Any how the important thing that many overlook is water. You know when I realized how important water is to both weight gain or weight loss, I was a college senior. I got on the scale with out really hydrating that day and I was like 4 lbs off, on game day. So on game days I usually drink so much water, and after that I did about 2 hrs later, I don’t know where it came from but I had my weight back. Any water is critical to gaining weight and losing weight. Also a good multivitamin I use Perfect Multi Pack from Bulk Nutrition. When I’m gaining weight or “bulking” I take Isopure Mass. I works wonders and it doesn’t have all the bad carbohydrates and it isn’t loaded with sugars. I buy my supplements from Bulk Nutrition because they have the best prices and fastest delivery.

Weight Gainers

As I mentioned above specifically what I take and where I buy it so now you can too. Anyhow whwen I was a sophmore my coaches made me take NLarge which IMO or in my honest opinion was garbage.
Don’t get me wrong it is certainly loaded with calories. But the worst of all products in my opinion it was loaded with sugar. Thats great if you flat out just want to be fat and have “titties.” Long story short I took it for two weeks. This situation reminds of a teammate I had M.S he couldn’t gain weight because he had no clue. He would wake up not eat breakfast then go to work. Then on lunch break eat 1 small sandwich. Then go to training then come back and eat 1 small sandwich and take a weight gainer. Now if you have been following this entry what is he doing wrong? Well I’ll tell you:

BREAKFAST is a must
The idea is increase calories not skip meals
2 small sandwiches? What are you 2 (2 years old)
Do the math and obviously he is getting about 1600 calories
1600 is great if your Paris Hilton

The problem I had with MS is that he witnessed my weight gain but didn’t follow what I told him to do. But yet he sounded like the average high school kid who emails me telling me they eat alot. 2 sandwiches is not a lot and eating a lot is a minimum of 5 times a day. If you claim you eat a lot but don’t gain weight do this. Write down everything you eat throughout the day for a week and I personally will send you a plan to follow.

In Closing

In closing bottom line is if you want to gain weight you have to eat more, increase your calories. Yes even if you already think you eat alot. Make sure your getting plenty of water I would say a gallon minimum for any football player. Don’t stress yourself out trying supplement after supplement. A supplement is just that a supplement not a weight gaining solution. People honest think they can take a shake and that be their meal, sorry doesn’t work quite like that. You can take a supplement and have it be a meal if your eating like 7 meals a day with the shake included but don’t eat 3 meals a day including a weight gainer shake. Just not going to work. Well I hope I clarified some things. Until Next time…
