Staying in Football Shape

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

If you are an athlete not just a football player you will appreciate this. You ever wonder why you can run up and down the basketball court or the soccer field but when it comes to football you don’t seem like your in great shape? Well the truth of the matter is you aren’t in “Football Shape”. It has been estimate that in College Football games on average a play lasts about 5.8 secs and all the plays in a game total up to about a little over 5 minutes of actual game play. Many people and football players don’t even know these facts. This is why there is a different method of preparing for football.

Drills and Agilities

Of course there are drills that are specific to the sport of football alone. These drills include:

  • high knees
  • butt kicks
  • Kareeoka or (however the heck you spell it)
  • side shuffles
  • Up downs
  • short sprints
  • “Oklahoma Drills”
  • rope drills
  • ladder drills
  • etc.

Then you have the drills that are come from track work outs that place emphasis on explosion like:

  • Running with Sled/Parachute
  • Other Resist Drills
  • Bounding
  • Stance and Start
  • Very Short Sprints
  • 110 yard sprints
  • Time running with short recovery
  • Now you are starting to get the picture that is why football workouts consist of many complex exercises and drills. Some help improve your explosion, others help with your recovery. You have to be able to be explosive every play and be able to recovery in a very short period of time. Think about this scenario: you just ran a football play (5.8 seconds) about 30 to call next play in the huddle and your running again, you get such a short recovery period and that could have been a 40 yard play or a 5 yard play but either way you have to be ready to go again that quick.

I wrote this entry today as a motivational tool, in hopes to keep players on the right track in their off season. Give you all a brief explanation of why your workout may seem so vigourous that it may scare you. As a coach now I understand a lot of things that I didn’t understand when I played. Now I am actually apart of the planning and organizing aspect of high school football and I can tell you that everything makes sense and it is things that we are required to do to make you better. I can’t speak for every coach or every school but thats how it is in my program…CHS…Well until next time…

    Football Downtime in Summer?

    Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Football Training = No Days Off!!

If you are a high school football player then you have about a week off before summer weight lifting starts. The problem with this downtime is that many players won’t take advantage of it. You take about 2 finals a day even if you worked out for 30 minutes a day you would benfit. The thing to remember is when you play football there are no days and no plays off.

Don’t Take it the Wrong Way

Now don’t misinterpret what I am saying becase during the season your coach will give you a designated day off. And due to vigorous training and mntal stress that’s exactly what it should be - a designated day off.

    Improving Yourself as Player

I heard a surprising remark from my right tackle I mentioned early this week: “I need to work on my endurance this summer” he knows that’s what it is going to take to be successful all summer, and Im going to be right with him. But on that note at the end of summer weight lifting both high school and college football players will get 1 week off. By all means take care of your body put your feet and don’t blow all that hardwork on a party.

If you are taking some time off when you start this summer make sure you train hard and train till failure. Then go home and eat properly enough food enough protein carbs and fats also called macronutrients. Like Coach C said if you eat properly you won’t need the creatine and all that gnc crap.

In closing you already know football players get no days off…Do you want to be Good or Great? Just ask that question and put the effort into your preparation. Well Until next time…

    Coaching Football

    Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Coaching football is priceless. I had an amazing experience coaching football. The kids really enjoyed my presents and the concepts that I taught them. Football holds the ground for a lot of accomplish and standards to be set. I felt very accomplished when I got a 3rd string guard t become a starter in a week and a halfs time. The first thing he told me is “coach I suck at guard”
Then yesterday after the spring football game he thanked me for giving him confidence and believing in him when he didn’t believe in himself.

I told the players on my team to watch my right tackle #62 this kid was killing the gray teams defensive line. He was so pumped up he was blocking his own teammate. That was too funny but atleast I know he got after it. I said he was my new favorite player, the other kids asked why I said just because of his effort and enthusiam. And he is coachable I don’t know if it is because he knows how successful I was as an oline man in high school and in college or what.

I was only there a week and a half and it seemed like I coached for a season. Now I can began to see what coaches experience and how they feel about coaching. I have a good relationship with the players on the team, I have even played on xbox live with a few of them. Like I said about my college spring football season - there just isn’t enough time during spring football. I felt like we needed another day before the game but once we started warming up I knew we were ready. Basically as far as there not being enough time is: Once you really feel like your getting better and improving as a whole then the spring football season is just about over so when you start up in training camp you try to get back to where you left off as quickly as possible so you can continue to build…When I played I like to compare the length of spring football camp to the length of football camp right before the regular season begins.

In closing I told one of my students today that the feeling that I got from coaching was better than any paycheck I couldve gotten. I’ll close on that note. Football cleats $90 under armor $30 Coaching Football = Priceless
