What High School Football Recruits need to know

Secrets the Pros use for fast 40 yard dash times!!
Some of you can already imagine there is going to be an increase since of popularity. Your going to have supporters and haters. The supporters are people who are geniunely proud of you. They come to your games, actually they have came to your games before you were being recruited. The haters are going to be obvious, they won’t come to your games, they’ll make negative comments and might try to persuade you to do negative activities ie: smoking, drinking etc.

The reason behind this post is two fold so that the future college football player can know what to expect from the college football recruiting process and so everyone else not involved can know what the player has to go through. As always I will mention my personal experiences so you can see what I went through. I’ll be honest before I started being recruited I would occassionally make it to a house party every know and then. But I definitely noticed random people inviting me over and increased attention from girls. I wasn’t at all overwhelmed because I always believed that if you support someone you have to support them before they get famous or popular.

Recruiting Coaches visiting you at school

College recruiting coaches will come and talk to you at school randomly. I never knew when they would come, I never knew what schools were coming until they were there. I was randomly pulled out of classes to come down and speak privately with these coaches. They offer you things like scholarships, tell you about the free gear or apparrel that they would give you if you came, sneakers etc. They do everything they can to get you to come there.

Conversation between me and recruiting coach

I’ll be honest and say those conversations were so cut and dry here is what I can remember word for word:

Umass recruiting Coach: Yea we are really interested in you. We want to offer you a $100,000 scholarship. We will give you 2 pairs of sweatsuits and 2 pairs of sneakers that you can wear to all of the games. We are 40 minutes from your home in CT.

Me: So I get 2 pairs of sweats and sneakers?

Coach: Yes. So what do you think?

I didn’t know what to ask. The coach didn’t tell me about the offense they ran, the defense neither did he offer me to come up and watch a complimentary game. With that being said some coaches do the recruiting job a lot better than others. This conversation was so cut and dry….We want you, this is what we will do what do you think? That was basically our conversation. If I knew what I know now I’d obviously had asked more questions about me coming to a game about where they think I fit in, in there program etc. If you notice anything from the dialogue I think the coach thought he had me by telling me about the sweats and sneakers. Whoopity doo. Now granted at the University of Rhode Island we had some terrible travel clothes. And on that note I can’t say its not what you were to play because the high school I coach at right now is #5 in the State and all of our coaches are under amored like we are sponsored by them.

Surround yourself with good people

As a player you have to make good choices. Surround yourself with positive people not people that can hurt your career. I had a player last year who was a freshman tell me that he was picked up for baseball by a team captain who was going to smoke marijuana in the car. He then said coach you gone be so proud of me. He said I told him stop the car and I got out and called my mom to get me. I gave him a hug, because that is a good choice and that says something about him as a person. He has great character. You can only teach it but you can’t force great character on people. I had a teammate who got caught selling marijuana as a senior in high school. He still earned a full scholarship but his college career sucked. He was the one I wrote about who cried in front of the team at the end of our senior year. Don’t be that player.

On a closing note I just want to say to all the recruits don’t think for one moment that you don’t have support. Because I Coach Lewis will always support each and everyone of you who supports rmcfe.com

College Football Coaches & Teammates

I’m gone be 100% honest as far as college football coaches go it’s completely different from high school. This is especially if you come from a program where the high school coaches don’t curse or use profanity towards players. Let me say this if your a future college football player, get ready to get your face mask pulled, jacked up and belittled. I’ve spoken to College coaches about it and for the most part the general understanding is they do this to get you to react. Not react to them but react on the field. With that being said you do have to respect and understand that college football is a business. In the sense that everyday and every play a position is at stake. A starting position is at stake, a coaching position is at stake and a college scholarship is at stake. Those are 4 things that anyone with a passion for college football is not will to risk or lose!

College Football Teammates

Just from my experiences alone I am going to say that teams with the highest level of comradery and true sense of brotherhood do best. Now don’t get me wrong in thinking that every team 100% gets along, no that is wrong. I have seen some pretty intense fights amongst teammates and I hate to say it I had 2 fights myself one in the middle of practice and one at one of my teammates house parties. You have to realize that there are so many different personalities on a football team. You guys spend so much time together especially on the field and some times it can be overwhelming. But with that being said I will say that what makes it hard when you lose a teammate to a death. Whether or not you guys were 100% cool, that teammate
was a part of your family. The family that you both shared a common goal on. The countless hours of practice and training you realize that a piece is now missing.

My personal experiences with teammates

My former roomate and teammate who later quit the team spit on me one day at practice. Now I noticed when we were roomates he always made little comments or tried to talk about me the other roomates in our house. Anyhow I told him you gone spit on me and not say nothing? He said “shit happens” so I tried to be a smart player and walk away. But there is something inside of me til this day that can’t walk away from physical disrepspect. So I walked away and came back to him within 10 seconds and mushed him in the face. He swung and missed I connected with a right and then he connected with a left and I connected with 2 lefts. Then the fight was broken up. This all took place during our 5 minute water break. In the mean time I had split my pinky on his teeth when I caught him with those lefts and I gave him a bruise under his left eye when I caught him with a right. He just caught me in the mouth and didn’t phase me. I let me position coach know the deal and I’d plan to get him after practice but I was advised to let it go, he said “you had your chance and thats it.” I’m not trying to brag or boast about kicking his ass but I am just being upfront so you my audience can have a more realistic picture of what goes on within a football team. Because trust me you won’t hear this nowhere else and I think it’s information that needs to be provided.

Positive things about college football teammates

The most positive thing is the imprint that you and your teammates leave on each other. The bonds that you share that will last a lifetime…And thats why it is so frustrating to me that its hard to get free tickets and sideline passes because that contradicts the nature of lifetime bonds shared amongst a team and College football program.Another thing about teammates is on a positive note they come together when it is necessary. If you get into a fight, some trouble you will always have teammates
that support you and have your back. This is critical for freshman to have a sense of comfort if there is a problem with others on campus. Being away from home even though you may not know many people you will definitely know your teammates and I think it is important to establish solid relationships with upperclassman and team captains. I know because I honestly felt obligated to look after the younger guys on our team.

College Football Recruiting Issues

catvмебели пловдив
There are a few major issues that you should keep in mind while your in your recruiting process. Of course you can surprise your peers and teachers by keeping your grades at above average or above their expectations. Some athletes that are being recruited forget their grades. They think they that they are all set once they give a commitment and they forget that they have to go to class and have to pass all of their classes. Another fact that you should consider whenever you are meeting with coaches from a particular school is your happiness. Are you truly going to be happy if you attend this school or is there another school that you would be happier playing college football at? Proximity. The distance between your future university and your home. Are you going to be a hometown hero or a small presence at a big College? Do you want your family to be able to conviently watch you play? Do you get homesick and need to go home alot? What does the school do for your academics? Do they provide additional help or dedicated tutors for the football team? Does the team seem like they have good comradery aside from just winning games? Do the coaches seem to get along well?

Consider this while being recruited

You should also consider the campus life. How is the campus life will you be allowed to stay focused are there plenty of distractions is your campus near a beach? Also consider the life outside of campus ie going to stores grocery stores malls. See if while on your visit you can see a grocery store or a mall. If you come from a big urban area and your looking at a small suburban school you want to know how the people are. Being far away from home around a stuffy uncomfortble envinronment won’t make your college football career to enjoyable. Also consider the practice schedule. I’ll honestly tell you I didn’t consider this and I went to school not knowing we had practice on Sundays the day after our games. Win or lose. It is important that you know the practice schedule especially if you are religious and need to attend church on Sunday. One more fact that many recruits don’t consider is transportation around campus. Thank goodness I brought my car with me as a freshman. During my visit they told us there was a shuttle that would bring us to the weight room. Lets just say that I’ve never seen a shuttle unless it was full of recruits…Probably telling them the same lame ass lie “we provide a shuttle for our players to get to the weight room”. Anyhow you need to consider if you need a car for transportation and also find out if you can even have a car on campus as a freshman.

In closing I just wanted to list some ideas that I thought were important to consider during your recruiting process. Also if you can’t tell from the shuttle bus story some coaches lie. They say what you want to hear to get you to come there. So “player beware” if its too good to be true then thats what it is. What they say in the hood now “It is what it is”. Holla at yo boy. 1
