Be Encouraged
The most important thing when following your dream is to be encouraged. Of course your going to be surrounded by negativity, just don’t buy into it. Believe in your self and believe in what you are trying to accomplish. There is going to be some tough times. I think my offensive line coach said it best when I was a true freshman in college, he said “It’s going to get harder before it gets any easier.” And thats exactly how it went, our training got harder, classes got harder, practices seemed harder. Once I was a starter I realized that when your training in the off season, so is everybody else. When your getting better, your opponents are getting better.
I began not liking spring football. Not for the reason you may think, the reason is more complex. It was like spring football came and I felt like I had improved so much. And every practice I just felt like I got better and better. Spring football seasons last 15 days. So on that 15th day, I was angry. I felt like I was cut short, I felt like “I was just about to reach my peak” and just like that no more practices until football camp in August. Well I guess I can say I loved spring football, I just didn’t like how short it was.
Yes it’s nothing like “New England” weather , you never know what your going to get and I’ll say we did have some snow at the beginning of some of our spring football seasons. Not to get off topic but be excited when you have to practice in the snow, you never know when your last play is going to be. I mean its been all over the news, Mike Vick. A lot of pro football players were saying this week, you never know you can be one play away from your last play. And it’s the truth.
Be encouraged in everything you do whether it’s football or it’s math. Just prepare yourself, practice, do your homework so the exams are easy and your well prepared. Practice your techniques on the field so when it’s time to prove yourself you are confident. Let that confidence, encourage. You were put in that position for a reason. I was 229 as a freshman offensive tackle, but I was encouraged. I knew I could and that I would be successful.
The reason I wrote this particular blog is because I get a lot of emails with football players telling me: how small their school is, or that their school is not really known for football etc. etc. My reply is don’t worry about your school size and football status. Be encouraged, don’t let those things make you doubtful. If you want to play college football, do it. If I had to judge it, I’d say it’s 90% attitude. Think about it, I was 230 as a freshman and the following season I was about 235lbs as a starter on a good day. I have gone against plenty 300lbs plus Defensive lineman. It wasn’t just my body playing out there it was my mind, my heart, and my attitude.
I don’t mind when people email me those messages, because it allows me to motivate them and help them motivate themselves. I’ll end on this note. When I was a freshman in High School I got into a bad car accident, and the doctor told me I would never be able to run. I really couldn’t run when I tried to, so I didn’t for about 6 months and then I tried again because I wanted to. Long story short I ended up being captain of my high school football team, signing a full college football scholarship and becoming captain of my college football team as well. That’s attitude and that’s being encouraged.
