Ask College Football Coaches Questions

This entry serves an informational purpose. It is to help players and their families understand what types of questions they should be asking college football coaches who are recruiting them.

Academics

By all means ask questions related to academic success. Out of my whole career I seen one parent who was really concerned with study hall and extra help for her son. At my Alma Mata we definitely did have both study hall and tutors. However this is not a standard for college football players. Every program doesn’t have mandatory study hall sessions. So be sure to ask about that because after all it is “College” not just football.

If you have your mind set on the area that you would like to study, find out if the school offers that as a major. A lot of players don’t know but end up finding out that every school doesn’t have the major. We have had players that turned down scholarships from my Alma Mata because they didn’t have their ideal area of study. Don’t settle for a scholarship at a school that doesn’t offer anything of interest to you. If you want to be a cook find a good school with a culinary program as well as financial aid/scholarships for you.

Do your homework

Keep in mind that when you are being recruited the coaches aren’t going to sit down and tell you every bad thing that has happened in their program. There is nothing that says you can’t find out on your own. Look up news paper articles >> Use the internet<< research the coaches see what kind of background they have; where they are from, where they played and where did they graduate from.
My favorite= Find out the teams history:

What was the teams record the past few seasons? Notice any consistencies?
When was the last time they had a winning season? (500 or better)
When was the last time they had a losing season? (losing less than half of their games)
How long has the coaching staff been there?

Don’t make the mistake that I made: thinking that one player could change a program and lead it to having winning seasons. In case you don’t realize it takes 11 players at a time.

In Closing

In closing lets review: make sure you ask questions. You probably should make a small list of questions to ask your recruiting coach. When your on your visit ask some of the players, ask different players the same questions. Use the internet and look up information about the school and their athletic program. Remember there is only so much that coaches and players are going to tell you. Ask your parents if they have any questions or concerns that they would like to have discussed. Do whatever you can to make an educated decision regarding where you want to be. Well until next time…

I’ve tried to think it over and I guess this is just a rumor. I hate rumors that ruin private life so advise you not to believe it and leave your comments by yourself.
